Boys Want Easy Bake Ovens, Too

Four-year-old Gavyn Boscio asked Santa for an Easy Bake Oven this year. When big sister McKenna Pope set out to make her brother’s Christmas wish come true, she was disappointed that the toy came in only purple and pink and set out to change that, MSNBC reports . The smart thirteen-year-old started a petition to push Hasbro, the Easy Bake Oven’s manufacturer, to have more color options that appeal to boys. Gavyn, she says, is an avid baker and would play with an Easy Bake Oven no matter the color but he’d feel far too uncomfortable to share it with his friends.

Hasbro eventually responded to Pope, saying Bobby Flay was a big fan of the toy and that a girl and boy were the finalist for this year’s Easy Bake Baker of the Year Contest. They also noted that they had put boys on the packaging in the past, which wasn’t really helpful to McKenna—she already knew boys like the Easy Bake Oven. While Gavyn and McKenna aren’t satisfied with the way Hasbro markets its toys, some toy experts say Hasbro is just doing smart business by targeting the audience most likely to play with each of its products. Bobby Flay for his part encourages little Gavyn’s family to buy the Easy Bake Oven regardless of the color and have fun.
