Shooter at California High School Was Bullied, Officials Say

More details have come to light about yesterday’s shooting at Taft Union High School in Taft, California. According to Reuters, the shooter, a student at the high school, targeted specific classmates who he said bullied him. One of his targets was shot and is in critical condition at a nearby hospital. It is still unclear how many students he intended to harm.

After investigation, police discovered that the student made a plan on Wednesday night to attack those who bullied him. The shotgun used in the attacks belonged to the shooter’s 19-year-old brother but the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is still investigating to find the history of the gun. An armed security guard is usually on campus but was unable to reach the school because of snow.

This shooting comes after the school, the only high school in a town of just 10,000 people, held a lockdown drill after a response to the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The student was seen entering school with a shotgun and witnesses called the police. Before arriving on the scene, the shooter had opened fire in a classroom of 28 students, hitting two. A teacher and school administrator were able to talk the gunman into putting down his gun and got the remaining students out of the classroom. Police arrived on the scene roughly 20 minutes after shooting began.
