The game night classic may be getting a makeover, CNN reports. In a move that mimics a lot of popular contest shows, Monopoly will letting players vote for their favorite token on their Facebook page. The favorite will stay and the least favorite will be retired and new one will be added by mid-year. The current Monopoly tokens are the boot, top hat, iron, battleship, dog, race car, wheelbarrow and thimble. Possible replacements? A guitar, diamond ring, cat, helicopter, or robot. Fans have until February 5 to make their choice.
Available in 111 countries and 43 languages, the game as certainly gone far in its lifetime, but it may be time for something new. Hasbro, the game's manufacturer, wants the game to stay as current as possible. It's important to attract a new generation of players to the game, executives say, which was first released in 1935. So far, more than 10 million people have liked the special Facebook voting page to let their voices be heard about one of the new tokens. Right now, the Scottish terrier token is furthest ahead in the voting for the token to stay a part of the game.
This isn't the first time game tokens have been retired. The lantern, rocking horse and cannon have all been removed from earlier editions of the game. The new token is one of several changes Hasbro's made to the iconic game in recent years. In 2011, the game added a debit card machine to the 78-year-old board game.
