It seems not everyone can get a fresh start. Stacie Halas, a science teacher at Richard B. Haydock Intermediate School in California, was placed on administrative leave in March of last year after students and teachers found her in adult films on the Internet, Reuters reported. The school board felt her previous work as a porn star made her unfit to do her job, and the Commission of Professional Competence upheld their decision.

Halas acted in roughly a dozen adult films between December 2005 and August 2006 while working as a substitute teacher at two other school districts. When applying for her position at Haydock Intermediate School, she didn’t tell administrators about her previous work, hoping to leave it behind her. But students soon found her online under the name Tiffany Six and showed teachers, who then asked administrators to remove her from the school. She began the appeals process in October, hoping to get her job back. The case also investigated whether or not Halas was engaged in porn during her time as a full-time teacher. In her appeal, she said she began work as a porn star after her breakup with her fiance left her $100,000 in debt. She insists that she stopped her work in porn long before she began teaching, but lawyers working on behalf of the state said she continued.

A panel of three judges felt she wouldn’t be able to do her job well because she would not serve as a good role model for students. They also said they felt reinstating her as a teacher might give students and parents the idea she condoned the degradation of women and “deviant sex acts”. Halas is now banned from teaching. She wanted to serve as an example of someone who could leave behind her past and become an upstanding member of society. Judges felt that even though she was no longer actively producing new pornographic material, she was unable to be “an effective teacher and respected colleague” because of the films’ availability, ABC News reported.

In 2011, a Florida teacher was fired when it was discovered he had been an actor in gay porn but he was later reinstated.
