We were thrilled to see Quvenzhane Wallis, the little leading lady of Beasts of the Southern Wild on the red carpet at last night’s Oscars. We were a lot less thrilled when satirical newspaper The Onion tweeted the following about the 9-year-old star around midnight EST:

According to Buzzfeed, the tweet stayed up for about an hour but was taken down after the backlash. Many were horrified the newspaper would take a shot at child. Others, however, said The Onion was trying to make a valid point about the cruel, senseless gossip surrounding celebrities, especially female celebrities, but did so in a tacky way involving someone too young to understand the joke.

The publication itself has yet to address the tweet.
