Crystal Kelley was happy to be a surrogate mother for childless couples. A single mother, she’d suffered two miscarriages and was happy to help. She also knew the $22,000 fee would be a big help.
About halfway through her pregnancy, doctors told Kelley and the baby’s parents that the girl would be born with severe heart defects, brain issues along with a number of other health problems. They said she’d have less than a 25 percent chance of leading a normal life. The couple offered Kelley $10,000 to have an abortion, saying they didn’t want to bring a child with so many health problems into the world. The surrogate refused. “I was the one feeling her kick and squirm. I knew she had a fighting spirit.” Watch the CNN video to hear more of Kelley’s story.
