Moms With Tattoos – A Beautiful Thing or Taboo?

black mom tattoo

On the way from school last week my son yelped from the back seat:

“Mom, you got ANOTHER tattoo?!” Sure did.

I am a proud tattooed mom. I got my first tattoo when I was in college, a butterfly on my lower back. My most recent tattoo I got for my 36th birthday a few weeks ago, a small star behind my right earlobe. The question that most have who happen to be on the other side of the tattoo fence is, “Why?!” I reply, “Why not?!” Maybe it’s because I’m a creator at heart; a storyteller that enjoys weaving a beginning, middle, and end together seamlessly.

For me, tattoos are my way of telling my life story without words. I can look at all my tattoos and be transported back to a time in my life where I’m reminded of my experiences; good, bad, happy, or sad.

Tattoos are a form of self expression, just like coloring or cutting your hair; they just happen to be far more permanent. My tattoos were one of the strongest assets as a Social Worker. My clients would see them and then look at me as if to say:

“You’re not supposed to have that, those are only for cool people, not grown ups.”

People often say, when you’re 80 you’re going to wish you didn’t have all those tattoos. Not this girl. I will probably be leaving at tattoo parlor on my 80th birthday proudly showing off my newest addition.

My mom has a ton of tattoos …and you know what , more power to her! I think tatoos are great when they have a story behind them..they show who you really are :)

  • Gee

I have 3 tats. Got my first right before I was 18 and I let my mom choose it (it was actually part of her stipulation for me getting it 2 weeks before I was an adult) and I love it because she picked it. Got my second one at 19 and my fiance and I picked it out together it was a special time in our lives and I got my third at 23 and it symbolizes the life and death of my grandmother. I regret none of them and I am sure I will get at least 2 more. Parents shouldn’t be shunned because they have tats.

I love every one of my 8 tattoos….neither one of them defines me as a mother! I love that my children debate on which tattoo I should get next…..so when you’re going on your 80th take me with you! B-)

Love these real mom debates.thanks for the good reads……

    • http://www.facebook.com/danielle.brown.351756 Danielle Fisher Brown

I’m with you Moniette. I LOVE my 8 tattoos and didn’t start until I turned 40. I also consider myself to be a classy lady as do the people who really count in my life… my children. My personal preference, key word personal, is to strategically place them, so they are not all out in the open just because I think it’s sexier on me. However, several are visible and I’ve reached a point in my life where I really don’t care what other folk think about them. I have had nothing but compliments about them from men and women however. Tattoos are a PERSONAL preference and it infuriates me when people judge others for having them. ALL of mine have a very special meaning, as I am not into getting any and everything put on my body. I also don’t have a lot of explaining to do with my kids, as I don’t hide anything from them and have gone with me to get tatted. I just don’t understand folk sometimes and don’t get where the holier than thou attitude comes in because I’m sure God didn’t make you perfect and in charge.

  • CriticXtreme

And only if you’re not hood with a big Drake tatoo, Omar was here tatoo or any of flavor of the month’s name on you. It’s even sexier because you’re being you especially with no fake hair.

  • Lucky Stars

I have 5 tattoo all of my childrens names including mines. Tattoos do not define who you are. My kids principal have one on her leg going down her ankle. That does not mean she’s a horrible educator.

    • PrettyMiss

      Thumbs down for grammer alone!

    • chanela

      you dont know their names?

  • http://twitter.com/SparkleKimberly Kimberly Sparkle

I have two tattos both are butterflies and each are less than an inch in size. I personally dont have a problem with the concept of tatoos but when they are large (in a highly visible place) and not professionally done it can become a big mess.

  • Hello_Kitty81

It depends on what kind of tattoo you have. I’m a mom of a 5 year old daughter and I had 4 before I got pregnant with her and had 4 more after I gave birth. I even had an image of my daughter with the words “Mommy’s Little Angel” tattooed on my arm for my 30th birthday. Tattoos don’t define the inside of the person. I love tattoos, but I would never get my husband/boyfriend’s name on my body and have a face tat, that’s just gross.

    • ugh

      tacky tacky tacky ole women.

  • Gayle

I have 9 and all can be covered with clothes. I am the mother of a young black man who is in his senior of college and an 11 who gotten all A’s since she began school. I regret none of it, as the author of this article says every one of my tats mean something to me and in my opinion will age like me, a fine wine!

  • LOVELY

I LOVE THAT IM ABLE TO EXPRESS MYSELF THRU THE ART OF TATTOOS. I PUT THEM IN PLACES WHERE THEY CAN BE HIDDEN WITHOUT NOTICE.

    • Yes it is colder london

Why hide if it is an expression of oneself. Is it not your body?

  • BBBEE25TEE

It’s not the fact that they have tattoos it’s the type of tattoos and how the tattoos look that would make it inappropriate. Mothers are individuals too and as long as their tattoo is tasteful, I think it is ok. Now if they have Bottom Btch and DkSucka on their body, HELL NO!

    • RedEye59

Tasteful tattoo? There is no such thing.

      • BBBEE25TEE

Yes there is like a rose, something feminie and dainty, small (not those big tats). Tats are artistic to me especially when they have a meaning behind them. I think they can be pretty or look nice but it depends on the skills of the tat artist, the person’s skin, the size of the tat (especially on a female) and the way the tat looks on the person.

        • RedEye59

A rose? Ok…So the only way to express or articulate one’s life story is by permanently desecrating your body for the glorification of your self esteem. I’m sure you could think of a way to get your message across without self-destruction, no? A tattoo is a serious indicator of poor judgment and no imagination.

          • BBBEE25TEE

You choose to see it that way and I see it differently. Some follow religion and say it is desecrating and some do not. I have none by the way, but I don’t see anything wrong with a tattoo, I just don’t. I can understand your point about the whole maturity thing to a certain extent as well.

          • RedEye59

Tattoos are for short-sighted pleasure seekers. They look “cool” when you’re at a bar when you’re 20 all liquored up, but in your mid-30 in a staff meeting or PTA conference, you look like a damn fool.

          • hanna

put another way: when you are 40 , you will not want to live in a house that you decorated when you were 25.

          • jazzylou79

I have tattoos. I have them in places where if you don’t see me outside of work you have no idea that they exist. I love art & I love it on my body. However, I do disagree when anyone especially women over do them. I am 33 & I don’t regret my 4 tattoos. As a matter of fact I am thinking about getting another.

      • BBBEE25TEE

Who knows? They could have one in between their thighs and we will never know.

      • BlogBytch

You’re asking as if you know for a FACT that they do not have tattoos lol. The only person who MAY not have one is Rice only because of her age group.

      • JamieC

Are they the only examples of what classy women should be like? I don’t have tattoos and never want one because they’re too permanent, but I won’t knock others for having them. Some tattoos have cultural or spiritual meaning. They aren’t always tacky, random, meaningless drawings/words. What is tasteful depends on the person and culture.

        • RedEye59

Are they the only examples of classy women? No, but I’m not gonna go down the list of thousands… Tattoos don’t have any cultural or spiritual meaning — the symbols do, and choosing to permanently ink that symbol on your body demonstrates a person who is a complete idiot. Taste doesn’t depend on a person at all, society dictates tastes. And there is a reason when you walk into an job interview ( when you want to appear responsible, competent, and not directionless) you cover it up.

          • JamieC

Well, you and I are intitled to our opinions, but my point was that for some people and cultures, it isn’t a matter of being “idiots” or not. Someone in America or Canada would think I’m an “idiot” if I decide to walk into a job interview with my face painted like a Massai might (yes, I know a painted face is not permanent), but that would be fine in another setting.

      • http://www.facebook.com/sro24625 Sonia R. Ortiz

What makes you sooo SURE they dont have one ? I am 51yrs old I happen to have TWO and no one knows i have them except for my adult children. 1st. because they are on my back the 1st one is my late mother’s lips with a RIP Mami and the other one is a beautiful Broken Heart and that’s to remind me Never to open my heart to anyone again and yes i am single and Very Happy Now is my Time to take care of Me and only Me I serve the Lord and he has been really Great to me and I thank and praise him every day.

        • RedEye59

Like I said, people who get tattoos lack any imagination and are short-sighted thinkers. Your mother passed — my condolences — but that’s the best way you can think of honoring her memory? What about establishing or contributing to some charitable organization or cause she was devoted to in her name, or something to that effect that could have a far more of a lasting effect? And why on your back, where nobody can see it, even you. Stop rationalizing the fact that you were following a fad that you thought was cool because you are incapable of independent thought As for the broken heart, I’m not even going to ask you if you need a tattoo in order to make better relationship decisions. Such a thought is so ridiculous I don’t even know where to begin.

I am a sexy mom with 11 Tattoos in which I added the most recent just 2 days ago. I love all of my body art because its a self expression of where I was during a certain part of my life. My Tatts are classy and placed in areas that are not revealed unless I choose like Rhianna. Its all in the way you decide to represent yourself that makes the difference from Classy or Ratchet.

    • Detector

So, that crap climbing up her neck, on her wrist, fingers, feet, etc. isn’t ratchet? They aren’t revealed? Puh leeze.

  • ItsRoni

I love tattoos. But I do believe that they should be tasteful. Some people get some of the most awful tats when they are young (and stupid) and are later embarrassed by them. People need to be careful not only of WHERE they get tattoos on their bodies but also WHAT they get tattooed on their bodies. I don’t care how “creative” you think you are, some tattoos no longer look good when you are old. And some you may not want your children or grandchildren to see.

  • firefly86

I noticed after reading everyone’s comments, that they have a lot thumb down! WHY? Its their choice their body!

    • Hello_Kitty81

Thank you! Just because us moms have tattoos don’t make us bad mothers at all. People need to stop being judgmental.

      • yoyoyo

        LOL, really!

        • http://www.facebook.com/shanifiu Shani Bernard

ok sooooo…not to get in a heated discussion, but to maybe clarify something….I think everyone should have free rein over their body PERIOD. However; from further away, on darker skin, tattoos do not show up so clear and can often look like scarring, burn scars or extremely dirty skin to me . (my eye sight is not the greatest though) Maybe this is what Wepo1 meant, but was not as eloquent about it. However these are just opinions, let us not attack or call names to people over opinions in a blog. Neither behavior makes any of us look good.

          • Nina

Ummmm, they don’t look good on lighter skin either. Maybe one is okay, but people with a bunch of tattoos or even one really big one is tacky.

          • http://www.facebook.com/shanifiu Shani Bernard

@4160af00dbe4f45e4e23afc585df3faf:disqus that is a matter of taste….I like seeing peoples tattoos and I think they show up better and it is easier to see the art work on lighter skin, this is not a racial comment just my opinion about my observations.

  • DreadJudge

Tattoos are tacky and hood. On most darker skinned black people, they look like dirty stains. You can’t even tell wtf they are supposed to express, cause the tattoo done faded, stretched etc. Getting tattoos is one of the dumbest habits black people got from whites.
Now the same hustler who charged you to get tatted is the same one who will charge you to take it off, at 10 time the price. A bunch of black women you can’t even take to a formal dinner unless she wears a burqa. Looking like a hoodrat while you are trying to class it up.
The only people who should get a pass on tattoos are Pacific Islanders and military men.
Anyone else is a complete fool.

If you want to express youself, get one of those tees with a slogan on it. That’s what I did.

    • Obee

How you choose to express yourself is your choice… dont expect others to live according to your choice and decisions. Every one has the right to live their life the way they please, coz at the end of the day, you will not be held responsible for MY actions… You are the one with the problem, so maybe you should handle your own issues first before you judge others and act holier than thou.

      • chanela

is it really “holier than thou” if it’s true? you mean to tell me that it’s holier than thou to not want to date a girl who has a tattoo of a penis on her face saying ” i love to suck”? how do you introduce your mom to her with that? there are people with dumbass tattoos and yes obviously it’s their body, no need to even mention that… but seriously… if something is obviously dumb how is that considered being “holier than thou”??

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=724422630 Renee Green

LOL you sound ridiclious , but it is your opinion,,,, people do what they want there are many military wives that have tattoos and they go to the military balls , depending on the dress you see them or you don’t . but who cares, what is the definition of HOOD RAT ?

    • pokyprincess

That sounded oddly racist. Just lettin’ you know.

  • tracy

Leviticus 19:28 do not mark your skin with tattoos when will they learn!

    • Carlos Harris

Thank you Tracy. I see that someone else knows the truth. You know what is really important about this is that it was not Jesus, or a prophet or anyone else that made this commandment, but it was God that said it and no one else and people still go against His will. It lets you know how many people really will be saved.

      • Mztisa

Because you’ll be helping at the gates?!?! Why are you so worried about other people? Make sure YOUR life is right and that YOUR keep YOUR EYES on GOD. Tattoos or not I am saved and you are NOBODY to tell me otherwise!!

        • SMHgurl24

AHAHAH! “You’ll be helping at the gates” go ahead girl!!!

    • brittany

I was waiting for someone to pull out some scripture…it isn’t that serious lol

    • Shell

So Judgmental and holier than thou comments. All you judgmental know it
all people out there, I do hope you ALL are living your life to the
highest level of elevation to say what type of character a person is
because they have tattoos… You may not like it, or agree with it but,
to determine who someone is, what type of person they are, or MOTHER
because they choose to ink their bodies. Then to throw your Church
doctrine into the mix is another thing. You quote the scripture
especially the TORAH/ OLD TESTAMENT I also hope you personally follow closely. But, I have the feeling you don’t.

    • Mztisa

I will assume your sinless since your over there casting stones!

    • Anonymama

Bet you don’t eat shrimp, wear polyester, and have never fornicated either, huh

    • Sit Down in the Name Of

Any reference to descendants of Africa singeing their scalps with sodium hydroxide (yo Perrrrm) to emulate a more ‘euro-friendly’ texture of hair? How about these plastic eyeballs (colored contacts) that so many of my sistas sadly hide behind? What about nosejobs? Skin bleaching? “He who is without any sin; let him cast the first stone” – Jesus -

      • Time to Get Conscious

And let’s not even start with the Dietary violations being committed left and right; day by day (pork, bleached grain and sweetening products). All these children ain’t developing Type II Diabetes on their own! We need an article called “Moms with no clue how to feed their children”. A lot of our treasured recipes from Plantation times (when scrap meat and animal fats were the main options for substantiating and flavoring the sloth Massa decided not to have served in de Big House) didn’t effect our ancestors the same way, because they were more mobile. Now, we wanna use technology to all but wipe out bottoms after using the toilet! And it shows. That’s way more indicative of a negative trend than a measly tattoo. I pray for the day we as Black people will come together and share insight on more significant Cultural and Community affairs besides……….a measly tattoo.

I am a mother of two sosns I have 6 tattoos all tasteful. I love Tattoos and I agree with BBBEE25TE. It’s all about the tastefulness of the Tattoo

  • ijs

beauty is in the eyes of the beholder so to each is own

  • Lurking

I am a mother of 2 and I have 4 tattoos and will get more if I choose and that doesn’t make me a bad mother. I agree with those of your that say it really depends on the kind of tattoos you have and where they are. I am a professional so my tattoos can be hidden easily for my work life. I wouldn’t dare tattoo anything x-rated on my body or on my face for that matter. Not only do I find that ratchet my husband and my kids would kill me LOL.

  • carlos harris

The answer is easy, just look at what God commanded us to do in Leviticus 19:28

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=724422630 Renee Green

      Leviticus 19:28English Standard Version (ESV)
28 You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=724422630 Renee Green

and besides myself sitting in church with my 4 tattoo, which you may see 1 thats on my ankle , because of my clothes I wear to church covers them up, but in church you will see many with TATS’S thats not to say just because we have TAT”S we aren’t Christians. before I became a Christian , I didnt read Leviticus, God isnt going to hold that against because he has forgiven me for my sins. and I haven’t thought about getting anymore, but People make their own choices, its not for me to say oh you shouldnt get that , I have to take care of me and make sure that I do the right thing , and if I had the money to have removed I would, it’s costly. as long as the tattoo shops are around people will be of interest and keep getting them.

      • Here We Go Again

There’s a reference to earrings, so are all these televised ’1st ladies’ to their pimpin pastor hubbies going to hell for violating Scriptural Dress Code? What about those who’ve braided their hair? Worn pants? You came to the wrong forum to go flappin your Cloak of Religiousity.

I have no problem with tattoos. But I always find it hard to believe it when people say that their tattoos represent their lives when they just have random trendy things like stars, roses and butterflies. It’s almost as if the adult word is having an 80′s complex. When I was in grade school we had Lisa Frank stickers. There were stars, hearts, butterflies, unicorns and so on. We stuck them everywhere. On our books, on our clothes, on our bodies. It feels like that is what adults are doing with tattoos now.. Like hearts? Get a heart tattoo. Why stop there? Like French fries? Get a french fry tattoo. Tattoos used to have meaning. Now they are mainly just fashion.

    • chanela

THANK YOU! don’t even get me started on the people who get a tattoo of every single deceased person who has ever died. getting a tattoo of people’s faces is creepy.. imagine being in bed with someone about to get it on and their granny or mom is staring at you. if you want to remember them then they’re in your heart and your memories.

Y’all NEED to be more worried about “Moms with Diabetes Type II”. “Moms with AIDS”. “Moms in Prison”. Such phenomena is a reflection of LEGITIMATELY concernable lifestyle choices. Enough of this slave-row-like naysay about things that will not REMOTELY effect us in the future. Like haircolor; a female has the right to do to her body as she wishes. A sista with neon pink hair and tats from eyebrown-to-Big Toe probably ain’t concerned about being employable. She may be riding the welfare gravy train all the way to the Last Stop. A lot of sistas gon’ find out the hard way that achieving self-reliance is SO MUCH MORE important than all this trivial $#!T I keep coming upon on a site I HOPED would provided enlightening perspective. Not So Much. #MadameNoireWhatAreYallThinkinAbout?#

I have one tattoo on my leg I regret. But the rest I’m okay with. If I had to do it all over again, I probably would only have 1 (I have 4 (6 technically because one is 3 things together). When you’re young you do things that you live to regret. But such is life!

Love all (3) of my tatoos. They are my journey through my later life. Got my first tat on my 50th birthday, It was a wonderful experience, my son was there as well as my husband. my 2nd tat I got in Sturgis, SD during bike week. Hubby and I rode our bike from Fla to SD for the event. Now as I celebrate my 65th birthday this week I still look at them and remember the wonderful life I am living. Just as an after thought—i got my nose pierced on my 60th birthday.

Yes, I’m a proud mom with a tattoo. But it’s on my back and most days I forget it’s there. My ankh tattoo means a lot to me and I’ll explain to my son why I got it – if he ever asks.

i’am a mother and a grandmother , i have 4 tats,,,,,, not all over my face or anything , on ankle, shoulder, and below my hairline on back, I dont like seeing ladies with TATS on their face, neck , a whole rose going up their legs. thats ridiculious too ME, or their hands,,, now thats not professional,, my opinion

  • http://www.facebook.com/christy.barbosa Christy Barbosa

My first (and so far, only) tattoo is of a fairy that was illustrated art by an artist whose work I’ve been fascinated with since my childhood. It’s on the inside of my ankle and is in memory of my daughter, Emma, who was stillborn. I certainly don’t need a physical reminder to remember my daughter but it’s therapeutic for me to have a conversation piece that helps me bring my family’s story to people.

  • Sparrow

I know this is a bit of a mom discussion… But maybe the opinion of a child of a mother with tattoos is ok too? I first noticed my mom’s tattoo (a rose on her butt that she got at only 15) fairly late in life. I mean, I’d seen it before that, but I never realized it was something to ask about. She said “It’s very permanent art that people sometimes get to carry around for the rest of their lives.”
Over the course of my 18 years, she’s accumulated 3 more tattoos. I even drew one of them for her in grade school. They’re tasteful. She openly says that she wishes the seahorse on her back was smaller or that she regrets the rose cause it isn’t meaningful. But she also has taught me to carry the idea of a tattoo around for years before you get it. It’s art, your art, but it affects how others see you. Unfortunately, some people think it isn’t right and want to force their ideas on your body. So you have to be aware of problems that can cause.
I think because of seeing tattoos as meaningful art that is on me for life instead of a trending decoration, I make better choices than the parent saying “no, thats for hoodlums”
I already have my first ink, a butterfly awareness ribbon for my brother with celiac. I love it. It will be important forever. I think this amazing art has been created because of my beautiful mom with tattoos.

  • Dee Monet

I’m not a mother.. YET.! But I do have 5 tattoos & counting. I believe tattoos are self expression so it shouldn’t be looked upon as “ratchet”. If anything people without tattoos should look at people with tattoos in admiration. The intensity in having a needle etch your feelings onto your skin shows bravery & courage. The fact of taking that pain behind what your feel or believe says alot about a person.

Never seen one on any successful person as in attorneys, judges, president of the US. Seriously they are not meant to be. In the Bible, it states they are “heathen” practice.

Lol thats because these people wear long clothing (professional attire) most of the time. I have seen lawyers AND doctors with tats so how do you explain that?

Just when you hit that age when yo boobs and bums starts looking like used condoms and you start scaring away kids. That is when you will curse the day that you decided to have eyesores all over yo body.

What I find alarming is that as mothers if your children need a blood transfusion you can not donate if you got inked up in the last year. I dislike how the tattoo craze has woman getting them all over the place. I’m so tired of the stars, hearts, and other such trinkets woman get daily. But do what you want with your body but we can be clear that first impressions are lasting impressions and the woman I saw with an ejaculation penis between her breast was right where she belonged behind the counter at Wendy’s serving my food. If my son is interested in getting a tattoo that will be his decision. I have seen some of the worst art imaginable on many tattoo lovers. Its waste of ink and with hep b possibly being spread in nail salons one has to wonder what germs might be festering in the ink needle. I wonder how many moms ran out and got the HPV vaccine. I see some back alley tattoo shop that dont even look clean. I’m tired of turning down tattoo party request because everyone wants a permanent accessory. I can say when I see some of these stars dressed to the 9′s the tattoo does nothing for them. To each their own but to me its literally a waste of ink.

Actually Hillary Clinton does have a tattoo! Why is it “classy ladies don’t have tattoos” but men with them are “badass” WELCOME TO 2012 hello women are more powerful than men!!! I have 23 tattoos and love everyone & am not ashamed of any of them!!!
