It's no secret that we're obsessed with the notion of celebrity. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that according to a UK Daily News report, 86 percent of mothers view celebrities as their inspiration for maintaining a good work life balance. Or, maybe it is surprising.
Victoria Beckham ranked first on the list, while the classification for non-celebrity mothers came in at number 9. Can this really be true? Are we more inspired by Posh Spice’s ability to check her kid's math homework after jet-setting across the globe than we are a single mother working a double shift at a diner who still reads her kids a bedtime story every night? While it may appear to be that way at face value, there some other data points in the survey that add a bit of much needed context for this statistical phenomenon.
It is interesting to note that this same survey found that 96 percent of mothers feel money is the least important factor in raising good kids. Nearly all the mothers interviewed would prefer to be a good person than to make a name for themselves and earn lots of money. This may seem odd because celebrities obviously are known for making a name for themselves and getting paid lots of money to do it. However, there are some celebrity parents who are known for valuing their family life above their career aspirations. I think this notion of sacrifice and service played a big role in the survey responses since names such Angelina Jolie and Princess Diana are featured on the list. These two women are known for their charity efforts and having a close bond with their children.
In my opinion, the survey shows us that regardless of any mom’s socio-economic status, we are all faced with the same challenge: how to meet life’s demands and still be present for our kids. We don’t always have to find inspiration from those who are living life from the same vantage point as we are. I think we can be inspired by those who face similar circumstances, but are at the other end of the spectrum and have found a way to make it work.
Celebrity moms have a tremendous amount of pressure and competing demands for their time simply because of their notoriety. They are faced with the challenge of not only being present for their kids, but they also have to work to protect their kids’ privacy in ways that many everyday moms do not. Their work obligations can make it difficult to be home and tuck their kids in at night or drop their kids off to school in the morning. These are simple things that the average mom might take for granted, but are a central part of ensuring that the child has a balanced life.
For this reason, I do think a lot of normal moms find it inspirational when a celebrity mom is willing to make the necessary sacrifices to be present for her kids and give them a normal life. If we can admire Victoria Beckham for wearing a great pair of shoes, surely we can also admire her for being ever-present in her children’s lives despite the demands of her business?
I don’t care who you are or how much money you have, being a mom is still the toughest job on the planet. I am inspired by any mom who does whatever she has to do to put her kids first whether she is a celebrity, or not.
Who is your motherhood inspiration?
