In her twenty years in the entertainment industry, Syleena Johnson has held it down as a singer, songwriter, model, actress, and more, adding “mom” to her long list of accomplishments 5 years ago with the birth of the first of her two children. But despite her ambitious nature, Johnson admits that she still finds it difficult to strike that balance between career and motherhood; constantly battling society’s skewed expectations.
As a part of TV One’s breakout docuseries, R&B Divas, Syleena’s found comfort in co-stars like Faith Evans, who share her tears and triumphs as a mother and recording artist.
“It’s an amazing, amazing help,” Johnson tells MommyNoire. “It helps me tremendously. It’s one thing to know, ok, there’s mothers all around the world that have two and three jobs and they have kids and they work and do what they have to do support their families…It’s one thing to know that there are women out there that are doing that and be appreciative and think, ‘Man, I’m not by myself.’ But to actually see women doing it who are just like me, with the same kind of career, [who] have to go through the exact same world.
“Being on a cast with woman who totally get me, is refreshing. It’s refreshing because I can call Faith right now and say, ‘What did you do about traveling and your kids in school?’ I can ask her and she’ll give me a real answer that’s gonna help me. That’s awesome.”
