The Debate Continues: Why I Won’t Be Listening To R. Kelly’s Black Panties

With the release of R. Kelly's new CD, 'Black Panties,' a lot of old skeletons are reemerging from his closet. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few years, I'm sure y'all know exactly what I'm talking about. If you need a reminder, rumor has it Kellz likes his "women" young... very young... so young in fact, they aren't "women" at all, they're girls.

I remember the first time I saw R. Kelly & Aaliyah together.  They were on an episode of Video Soul. They were discussing her album, which R. Kelly was producing, ironically (or maybe appropriately) entitled 'Age Aint Nothing But A Number'. They were asked if they were boyfriend/girlfriend.  Aaliyah replied that they were "very close" and that he was her "best friend in the whole wide world." I didn't think much of it, until the end of the interview, when the host asked Aaliyah how old she was. "It's a secret," was her answer. Hold up- why was her age a secret? Red flags immediately went up, why doesn't she want anyone to know her age? A few months later, when it was revealed R. Kelly & Aaliyah had secretly gotten married, it all made sense. R. Kelly was in his mid-twenties at the time... Aaliyah was just 15. They had lied about her age, in order to get married. When Aaliyah's parents found out- they had the marriage annulled.

That was the first of many under-age incidents that we would find out about, involving R. Kelly and young girls. With each and every report, I became more and more disgusted with him. While I was disgusted, many others seemed unaffected by the shocking revelations that seemed to be making headlines every time I turned on the TV or radio. People seemed to be ignoring what had become so very clear to me; R. Kelly was/is a man with a serious problem. Can you say Sexual Deviant? What about Pedophile? I can!

The allegations that have been levied against Kellz are sordid, vile, filthy and wretched. I could go on and on. This is a 'man' that reportedly cruised schools, looking for young girls. When I say young, I'm talking 11 & 12 years olds! That's 5th & 6th graders, babies! People in his hometown of Chicago were aware of this practice, yet they looked the other way. WHY? Is it because he's a celebrity? Because he made good music, music folks liked to get freaky to? Please tell me this isn't the reason. It can't be the reason, can it?! I don't care how good his music is- I cannot & will not, support, endorse or listen to, someone that preys on young girls. I don't see how anyone can still support him and his career, especially women. Ladies, when Kellz sings about 'Feelin' on Yo Booty," he's not talking about you- he's talking about your daughters, your nieces and your granddaughters. Believe that!

The tapes... we all know about the tapes. Videos of him (allegedly of him,) with a 14 year old girl. In the video, a male can be seen urinating on a young girl, URINATING! How is this ok? Why isn't every woman on the face of the Earth outraged by this? That could be your baby he's pissing on! Would that be cool? I hear so many people saying, "Leave R. Kelly alone. That's in the past." You know what? I WON'T leave R. Kelly alone, because I've known males (I won't call them men, because they're not), like him. Males that prey on little girls, because they want to be the first to pop that cherry. Males that want to control & dominate the females they're with, and a little girl is a whole lot easier to control than a grown woman. It's not right, and I'm speaking up for all those little girls out there-they deserve to have a voice. They deserve to know someone cares. They matter - their bodies aren't toys for sexual deviants to play with and abuse.

What if it wasn't R. Kelly... what if it was a teacher or a principal at your child's school. Imagine your child's teacher preying on 11 year old girls in his class, or urinating on one of his 14 year old students. Would that be ok? Would you be saying to leave him alone and get over it? Would you? That'd be ok, right? If it's ok for Kellz to behave that way, then surely it's all right for teachers and principals to behave in the same manner, right? Oh wait... my child's teacher never sang 'I Believe I Can Fly'.

MJ was acquitted and there is no video of him pissing in a young boys mouth …. Read R Kelly’s court documents and then read Michael Jackson’s. Very different cases. Please get educated

      • danielle

        R. Kelly was acquitted as well.

        • JeseeSparte

But there is a video of him having sex with a 13 year old …. if that girl was your family member I’m sure your comments would be different. get educated.

    • Deborah Greene

      That is a lie

      • Welen Dowd

I agree, it is a lie. That was a way of the Illuminati, the Free Masons or whatever they call themselves to discredit Michael and end his career. He was exposing the industry for what it really was (IS).
They couldn’t make enough of us hate him so they got a few more albums out of him and eventually killed him.

I’ve never really been a fan of R. Kelly, so I honestly didn’t know about most of what you are talking about, but now I’m definitely inclined to research.

  • MavenMantrap

This is excellent!! I am so glad that you are coming from this perspective! So many people are NOT siding with the young girls!! Its Sad!!

  • GetReal

Yes I will admit I grew up on R. Kelly and I personally love his music pre TP2. HOWEVER, as a woman (more importantly a MOTHER) I must agree that R. Kelly is a despicable man if these things are true. I’m saddened for our views and how easily we forget celebrities discretions merely because of their fame. Forgive, sure. Forget? Support? Uh no. I have not and will not support this man. I am no saint, but this man is a predator.

  • guest

Never heard all these accusations. Was he ever convicted ?

  • justnay112

I have never commented on a blog but I wanted to let you know I agree 1000%! Yes 1000%! I have this argument on a regular basis. I was around the same age as Aliyah so it didn’t register then but once the tape came to light it all made sense. I remember listening to Vibe by R.Kelly and Public Announcement and at the end when he sang out names he said “little cute Aliyah’s got it. She was about 11 then so he was around her since she was very young yet still was able to view her in a sexual light. He is a disgusting predator. We as a society take pedophiles too lightly. It’s the worst crime next to murder in my book because you’re robbing a child of their innocence. The only reason murder ranks higher to me is because there’s no coming back. All in all I don’t and will never support R Kelly!

  • Mama to 5 Blessings

I am out of the loop – I do not even know who that is! Not my kind of music. Doesn’t sound like a good influence!

  • Little Miss Kate

I was actually not aware of all th R Kelly’s history. I do remember some talk about him and Aaliyah back when I was a young teen, but I never realized they were married.

  • MsDiva

I wish you all would learn to keep your comments to your damself okay I mean really the past is the past let it stay there No one cares okay the man has made his money and you all bought all his cd’s when he came out and as soon as somebody say something about child molestation everybody run to say their 2 cents you dont have no proof this man has been with underage girls all you know is he wrote and produced Aaliyah and was featured in her video then yall ran with this lie that he was married to girl at age 15 oh give me a break Black ppl love bringing other black ppl down STFU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • abdus

No Ms. Diva. Some black people love making excuses for bad behavior. We need to keep ourselves in check.

  • Hmmm

Ehh the 11 or 12 yo thing is definitely a souped up rumor. However, it was said around town that he parking lot pimped at high schools often particularly Kenwood. Still a creep move but let’s not get so carried away that we render everything else irrelevant due to dramatics. Meanwhile, I’ve been saying for the longest that he’s lost my respect simply based on the fact the trial dragged out for so long.

    • kissblue

I grew up in Chicago right before he blew up with his Public Announcement group. I was living in Hyde Park at the time (around 13-14 years old) and I know for a fact the he would ride around Kendwood High School (I was attending the jr high next door hint*) and he would hit on young girls all while promoting himself and his music to draw them in. He would say he was gonna be a big deal one day and he could make them a big deal too.
I didn’t pay much attention to who he was until a few years later when he did blow up, and rumors started to fly about him and Aaliyah. Then I thought back to my years in the Chi and how many young girls he preyed on. One girl was a close friend of mine and she was 15 at the time. I think he is a predator, I have followed his story over the years. There is truth to these “rumors”.
I have used this experience as a teaching tool for my young daughter and I pray to God he gets what’s coming to him.

  • GraceJoy5

Thank you for writing this. I was beginning to think I was the only who hadn’t brushed off R. Kelley’s under age sex addiction.(trust he’s still doing it) He may can sing but that does not take away from his disgusting behavior. I’m a mother of two beautiful girls and I’ll be damned if I ever say “leave R. Kelley alone” or “that’s old” or he got money tho” huh???… I wish more people would see him for who he is and call him out on his s#!+. I know for sure some average Joe’s are in jail/prison for the same thing R. Kelly Did. And are being ridiculed on a daily. I’ll never buy his music there are other wonderful/ amazing singers out there.

  • Sweet Tea ATL

These allegations are current. The village voice published an article this month about at least 10 other under age girl cases that were filed in court after he was acquitted of making child pornography. Read up.
