Dale and Leilani Neumann, the couple in the Kara Neumann prayer death case, have been in the news off and on for the last six years. The Wisconsin couple turned to prayer instead of doctors for their 11-year-old daughter Kara instead of taking her to the hospital, and she died in March 2008 of untreated diabetes. They were convicted of second-degree reckless homicide. The court had placed a stay on the beginning of their sentence as the Neumanns appealed the decision, but a judge has ruled they're finally going to jail.
Dale and Leilani will serve six months in prison, a month at a time, and ten years probation. In a hearing earlier this week, the Neumanns and their attorney argued they'd suffered enough, thanks to financial issues, shunning by their community and of course, the death of their daughter. But that's insane. It's not enough. A child died of untreated diabetes because they refused to realize there was an actual problem. The fact that this case has dragged on so long is disturbing and disgusting.
