Corporal Punishment In Schools – Would Black Parents Go For That?

A male Vice Principal took a paddle to 15 year old Taylor Santos’ backside after it was discovered that she let a classmate copy her homework. In an effort to show remorse for her actions, Taylor voluntarily submitted to a paddling instead of attending 2 days of in school suspension. The paddling practice is common in this particular Texas School District, though students are required to call their parents to get approval for this type of punishment.

The principal is said to have left marks due to the force he allegedly used while swatting at the child. Taylor’s parents was mortified having assumed that a female administrator would be doling out the licks. The school is not admitting to any wrong doing and at this time they are considering doing away with the ‘same-sex’ spanking rule. More prevalent in the Midwest and South, this hands on punishment remains a legal practice in 19 states. Some consider paddling to be a form of child abuse and can’t believe that the military isn’t allowed to hit soldiers, while children are being subjected to physical punishment.

Do you think that corporal punishment would work in schools where the majority of the students are African Americans? Or do you think this type of punishment is generally most effective where the Caucasian demographic is larger?

I moved from N.Y. to Fort Lauderdale FL, in 1979, when I enrolled my daughter in elementary school I was required to sign an authorization to allow corporal punishment, I looked at them like they were crazy, allow you to hit my child? never happen, needless to say,I didn’t sign it. I worked as a Teacher’s Assistant in Deerfield High School, it was common for those young men to bend over and have a grown man, always a (White Man) hit them, I thought it was insane, to avoid suspension and their parents finding out they broke the rules, they would take the abuse. In the case of the Male Vice Principal hitting a female, it is totally unacceptable. When it comes to our Black Children, this practice perpetuates that slave mentally, the master keeping the slaves in line. by beating them, putting fear into them. We are capable of disciplining our children!

I would leave work and go handle the situation myself before I would give consent for someone else to hit my children. I’m just sayin’!

I would never give consent for corporal punishment of my child. If there is a problem that needs to be addressed, as a parent it is my responsibility to handle it the way I see fit. Schools should be a safe place for learning. Give my child an extra assignment or a service project as a punishment.
