Regina King, 43, is one of my favorite Hollywood moms. She's gorgeous and has survived in the movie business for a minute. And in a recent appearance on "The Wendy Williams" show to promote "The Gabby Douglas Story", she showed just the kind of involved mom she is. Miss King's sex ed for her 18-year-old son Ian is definitely comprehensive.
Wendy asked Regina about things she and her son talk about when it comes to girls now that he's getting to be a man, kinda.
Wendy asked, “I heard that you talk to your son about sex and ask him, ‘Did you hold her?’”
“Yeah, ‘Did you talk to her?’ Regina added. “‘Do you guys actually talk?’ I think it’s important for him to know.”
“He’s young right now and the biggest part of sex is to get off, but he needs to know that there’s more to it than that.”
It makes me so, so happy to hear this. It's not always easy to think of your baby being grown and chasing girls, but the truth is, it happens, and fast. And rather than pushing him to wait, she's making it very clear that sex should be more than physical. Of course, kids need to know how to protect themselves physically, but a lot of teens don't account for the emotional effects of having sex. Boys, especially, don't, and tend to think there's something wrong with them if they want to show affection.
So hats off to you, Regina. Thanks for raising a sensitive, caring boy. Did you talk to your kids about the emotional aspect of sex?
