When life gets to be too much and I feel as though I’m spinning out of control, sometimes I turn to fasting in order to find my center and get back on track. What purpose does it serve for me? It helps me to quiet my mind, body and soul long enough to connect to myself so I can be reminded of what holds the most meaning in my life. My most recent fast took place the day before my 14-year-old daughter had surgery. I wanted to line up my thoughts and prayers completely in an effort to surround her with grace and protection to pull through this life event.
Fasting for some may be religious or may be practiced for the purpose of disease recovery or weight loss and detoxification. For others, it’s a regular spiritual practice that they turn to in times of need. I enjoy the discipline that fasting requires and it helps me to apply more self-discipline in other areas of my life as well. Fasting for a day or two is generally something that can be accomplished by the average individual; however, lengthier fasts similar to the Muslim practice of Ramadan should only be attempted by healthy individuals who can handle the toll it takes on you overall. If you have ever considered fasting here are a few of the benefits it can provide:
1. Resting your digestive system
2. Allowing for cleansing and detoxification of the body
3. Creating a break in eating patterns, while shining a spotlight on them
4. Promoting greater mental clarity
5. Cleansing and healing “stuck” emotional patterns
6. Leading to a feeling of physical lightness, increasing energy level
7. Promoting an inner stillness, enhancing spiritual connection
