Gimme The Money: Perri Pebbles Reid Wants $40 million for TLC Biopic

While many of us were singing “Don’t go chasing waterfalls” during the TLC biopic, “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story,” one woman was chasing down producers for allegedly publishing false accusations. According to PageSix, Perri “Pebbles” Reid, the group’s former founder and manager, is suing Viacom for $40 million.

“CrazySexyCool” was one of the highest rated cable movies of 2013. As fans melted over the authentic portrayal of the legends we’ve known as T Boz, Left Eye and Chilli; Reid says one character was left to question, that of her own.

The suit claims Viacom, VH1’s parent company, portrays Reid "as a conniving and dishonest business woman who hoodwinked three innocent girls and exploited their talent for her own personal gain." The suit also alleges that the network "ignored fundamental canons of journalistic and literary conduct by publishing false and defamatory accusations with actual malice."

Ten years ago, in 1994, TLC sued LaFace Records and Pebbitone, Reid’s management company, claiming they were only paid $50,000 each between 1993 and 1994 even though their album CrazySexyCool sold 11 million copies.

Reid has been outspoken about denouncing her portrayal ever since the movie hit TV screens last October but now she’s doing more than just talking. The suit filed Friday in an Atlanta feral court states that, contrary to what fans saw, Reid never controlled TLC’s lawyers or accountants, never withheld contract terms from TLC and always paid the group what they were owed.

“I have always been a private person and this unprovoked attack has been extremely upsetting to me and my family. My silence has empowered individuals looking for a payday at my expense. I have held my peace for 20 years and it’s time the truth comes out.”

A Viacom representative stated, "It's our policy not to comment on matters in litigation."
