It’s That Time of Year: Facing the Winter Sniffles

The school routine is in full swing and chances are the kids are bringing back a few germs with their homework. The runny nose and cough that seem to always appear around this time of year is not something you want to deal with. It’s the holiday season for goodness sake, who has time to catch a cold?

Make sure to keep your health a priority. Don’t cut corners on prevention. Germs are opportunistic and will find a way to slow you down. Here are a few pointers to keep you feeling good:

Get plenty of rest
It is almost a guarantee that if you are not getting enough rest and not giving your body a chance to recharge, you will get sick. Sleep is a requirement for the body. It is needed to maintain a healthy immune system. Make sure you are going to bed at a reasonable time.

Wash your hands
You don't have to go hand sanitation crazy, but please do wash your hands. Germs love a moist area and the mucosa of the eyes, nose and mouth are perfect entry ways into the body. Don’t forget to wash the hands of little ones who are constantly putting hands in their mouths.

Taking Vitamin C and other immune boosting herbs
Vitamin C and Echinacea are the most popularly recommended immune boosters. There are quite a few others such as grape seed extract, garlic, and elderberry to name a few. Please consult with your appropriate health care providers to ensure safety and efficiency.

Stay warm
A cool breeze is nice on a warm day, but when you get chilled, the immune system is challenged. Try to avoid winter drafts, especially near your head and neck. These areas are susceptible to wind and can cause congestion. Keep a jacket, hat and scarf handy…just like your grandma used to tell you to do!
